In-Demand Stopper Reveals PSL Hopes

He’s a man in demand, and while his club refutes claims of an agreement with Orlando Pirates, Richard Ofori has outlined his aims in the Premier Soccer League.

The Ghanaian international has been a rock as Maritzburg United’s last line of defence this season, keeping 10 clean sheets in 24 games, as he stakes his claim as one of the best goalkeepers in South Africa.

Only Ronwen Williams (11) has kept more clean sheets than Ofori has in the 2019/20 Absa Premiership season, and Maritzburg have the best defensive record in the league having conceded just 17 goals in 24 games – Sundowns have conceded 15, but played three games less.

Ofori is expected to be in the running for the Goalkeeper of the Season award when things wrap up in May, but he says he’s just focused on making sure that the team ends strongly, not whether he’s able to win any individual accolades.

As quoted by the club’s official website, the Ghanaian said, “As a goalkeeper you need to always aim for clean sheets because then possibility of your team winning a game is like 70 percent… I always say this league is one of the best for goalkeepers. You’ll see goalkeepers who are either second choice or first choice for his country. That lets everyone in the world know that this league has quality.

“I don’t think about goalkeeper of the season, I just think about the team, doing well in the league, because at the end of the day we are playing for this crest, which is Maritzburg United.

“And before individual awards, the most important thing is that the team is doing well. Anything else will come later. I don’t think about best goalkeeper, I just do my best.”
