Orlando Pirates veteran defender Happy Jele has said that Wednesday night’s draw against SuperSport United was a positive result, in the context of previous results between the two sides.
The match was touted as Bucs’ opportunity to apply pressure on current log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns in a race for the PSL title. However, despite the draw and effectively giving the Brazilians some breathing space, the Bucs senior player has declared the result a positive one.
“The result against SuperSport was not ideal but it wasn’t a bad one either,” said Jele.
“If you look at the past two seasons they have been able to edge us, however, on Wednesday we broke the dominance they had over us.
“Considering where we were last season as compared to where we are now and how far we have come a long way. Against SuperSport we played with a confidence we have not shown in recent seasons especially against a team like SuperSport,” added the defender.
Jele also emphasised that the success of the Soweto giants is not based on being measured against Sundowns.
“We want to finish the season on a high for ourselves. One of the ambitions for us is to finish in the highest possible position which will enable us to qualify for one of the CAF tournaments.
“As a club, we have always maintained that improving our stands from the previous two seasons was top of the list for us and I believe that we (did) this,” he concluded.
Though Pirates are now three points behind the Tshwane giants, they are still in with a chance at winning the league should Sundowns drop points in their remaining league fixtures.
