Gorowa's Zim Held Again

CAF African Nations Championship

Result: Zimbabwe 0-0 Uganda

Date: 16 January 2013

Venue: Athlone Stadium

Zimbabwe played to their second goalless draw in the 2014 CAF African Nations Championship as they were held to a 0-0 scoreline by Uganda in a Group B match at Athlone Stadium on Thursday.

Uganda have their goalkeeper Benjamin Ochan to thank for the point as they were mainly on the back foot throughout the game.

For Zimbabwe, coach Ian Gorowa will not be happy with his troops inability to find the back of the net,

The opening 45 minutes was a half dominated by Zimbabwe, but for all their possession they were unable to breach the Ugandan goal, but it was certainly not from a lack of trying.

In the fourth minute Zimbabwe created their first chance on goal as Tawanda Muparati tried his luck from long range, but his effort was well-saved by Benjamin Ochan.

Four minutes later and Zimbabwe’s Danny Phiri had an attempt from distance as well, but again Ochan was on hand to make a decent save.

Muparati was at it again in the 17th minute with a powerfully struck effort from roughly 25-yards out, but his shot went wide of the target.

Ali Sadiki should really have given Zimbabwe the lead three minutes later when he met a cross with a well-timed header, but his effort was brilliantly saved by the keeper.

In the 35th minute Milton Ncube beat a couple of defenders as he drove down the flank for Zimbabwe before whipping in an inch perfect cross for Sadiki, but he headed wide of goal.

Uganda’s only real effort of the half came a minute before the break as Yunus Sentamu took aim at goal from just outside the box, but his well-struck shot went narrowly wide of the target.

Zimbabwe, however, had the last say of the half with Simba Nhivi Sithole forcing his way past a couple of defenders and into the box in the dying seconds of the stanza, but his effort from was magnificently saved by Ochan.

The second 45 saw very few chances on goal early on as both teams tightened up in defence.

The first decent effort of the half came in the 63rd minute as Zimbabwe’s Kudakwashe Mahachi struck the woodwork with cross-cum-shot.

Two minutes later Mahachi turned provider as he picked out Sithole with a good cross, but the Zimbabwean attacker headed the ball wide with the goal at his mercy.

Zimbabwe continued to push forward and only the brilliance of Ochan kept the scores level in the 87th minute as he produced a fine save, low and to his left, to deny Phiri from a 25-yard set-piece.

The game ended 0-0 as Uganda continues to top Group B with four points. Zimbabwe, on the other hand, have played to two goalless draws and have two points to their name.
