Outgoing Bafana Bafana head coach, Gordon Igesund, has accepted SAFA’s decision not to renew his contract, saying it was a privilege to coach the national team.
As reported by the crew, SAFA told Igesund this afternoon that his contract, which is set to expire in August, would not be renewed.
The announcement on Igesund's future with Bafana was made by Safa President, Danny Jordaan, at a press conference this evening.
Speculation has been rife about Igesund’s future ever since Bafana failed to qualify for the 2014 World Cup and could not clinch the 2013 Afcon and 2014 Chan tournaments.
Contacted for comment Igesund said, ”My contract ends in August and SAFA have decided not to renew it, it’s as simple as that. I have obviously accepted the decision."
“It’s been a privilege and honour to coach Bafana and I have enjoyed every minute of it. Life goes on,” added the Bafana mentor.
Igesund has a very good record for Bafana in the official Afcon games and World Cup qualifiers.
In eight official Afcon games and World Cup qualifiers, Igesund holds the record of four wins, three draws and only one loss.
Out of the three draws, was the penalty defeat to Mali in the 2013 Afcon quarter-finals, which is recorded as a draw by FIFA.
With his future decided at national team level, it remains to be seen where Igesund's future will lie next.
The Bafana mentor has for some time now been linked with a move to either his former club, Moroka Swallows or SuperSport United.
