The loss was Maritzburg's fourth in a row in the league, while the win moves Ajax onto 16 points and ninth spot.
Ajax controlled the action in the first half, but despite a turnaround from Maritzburg in the second half, the Urban Warriors were able to get the win.
In the second minute Lebogang Manyama dribbled well into the box, but Shu-aib Walters made a good save to keep out his shot.
A minute later Aidan Jenniker sent in a good cross and Eleazar Rodgers got a good touch onto it and it beat Walters to give Ajax a 1-0 lead.
In the 13th minute Manyama made it 2-0 after some good work from Keagan Dolly down the left. Dolly pulled the ball back to Manyama on the edge of the area, and Manyama hit a great shot into the top left corner.

Ajax were awarded a penalty in the 58th minute after Mario Booysen was adjudged to have fouled Toriq Losper in the box, though the original fouled seemed to be just outside the area.
Manyama stepped up to take the spot kick, and Walters saved but referee Victor Gomes ruled it be taken again because Buckley and Thabang Matuka were in the penalty area as the shot was taken.
With the second attempt Manyama made no mistake as he sent Walters the wrong way, and Ajax led 3-0.
Almost immediately Buckley pulled one back for Maritzburg, as he placed the ball in the bottom left corner and out of the reach of Jaakkola to make it 3-1.
