Amakhosi Star On Title Hopes: Give Up? Not At Chiefs

George Maluleka says that even though Kaizer Chiefs are nine points behind Bidvest Wits with 10 games to go, any player who has given up on the Absa Premiership is ‘not in the right team’.

The Glamour Boys have some serious catching up to do if they’re to close the gap on the likes of Wits and Mamelodi Sundowns before the 2018/19 campaign comes to an end, but he’s eager to get things going today against Polokwane City.

Maluleka is expected to start for Chiefs this afternoon when they go into battle with Polokwane, and they could potentially climb back into the top five if other results go their way over the course of the weekend.

The 30-year-old knows it won’t be easy though, and their opponents’ 1-1 draw with Sundowns will have buoyed them as they also look to climb up the table towards to the top of the log with three more points.

Speaking to the media this week, ‘Mido’ said, “I’m very confident. Our training sessions are going well, and we’ve been doing very well (on the field). It’s not going to be an easy game, they drew against Sundowns, and they’re also there among the pack. I think they’ll also be looking to get closer. It’ll be a very difficult game, and we need to stay focused on this one for the league.

“It’s a bit early to take out calculators and do all the numbers now, but we’re nine points adrift so anything is still possible. I think it will go down to the last day, and for us – like any player – to give up at this stage means you’re not in the right team. All of us at Kaizer Chiefs believe that it’s possible, and we’ll push to the last game.”

Chiefs are currently seventh in the Absa Premiership after two-thirds of the season and defeat this afternoon could potentially even see them drop out of the top eight.
