Hunt: What I Want To Be Remembered For…

After victoriously overseeing his last game in charge of Bidvest Wits following seven years in charge,Gavin Hunt has opened up on the legacy he hopes to have left on the club.

The Clever Boys signed off in style after overcoming relegated Polokwane City 3-1 at the FNB Stadium. Goals from Eva Nga, Phathushedzo Nange and Cole Alexander ensured that Wits’ last ever game ended in victory.

For Hunt, who has overseen 269 matches at the helm of The Clever Boys, it completed his 50% win rate as Wits coach after racking up his 130th win.

When the 56-year-old took over as Wits coach in May 2013, the club had not won a trophy for three years, with their last victory coming in the 2010 edition of the Nedbank Cup.

Since then, Hunt has led the Braamfontein outfit to three trophies, which includes the Telkom Knockout, The MTN8 as well as the Absa Premiership title in 2017/18- something that fills the former SuperSport United coach with pride.

“It was a great way to finish, I think we finished fourth which is great with what we’ve got. It’s fantastic! I’m really proud of the players and the club.

“When a coach leaves you always think you want to leave it in a better place than when you arrived, but there’s not going to be that. I want to be remembered for giving lots of players opportunities and most importantly, I want to be remembered for winning the league, that is something you can never take away.

“It is something that hasn’t been done in 97 years and we did it, with a club of our size, that is something that will always live with me,” an emotional Hunt said speaking to the media after the match.

For Hunt, he joins the unemployment line after Tshakhuma Tsha Mandzivadhila owners revealed that they will not be holding onto his services in the new season.

The experienced mentor will not be short of offers though, he has already been linked to the likes of Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, though it remains to be seen what the next step is in Hunt’s illustrious career.
