Hunt: It Could’ve Been 5-0 Again
Bidvest Wits had their chances to beat Ajax Cape Town on Wednesday evening – including a miss from close range from Amr Gamal – and Gavin Hunt knows that it’s hurting the team.
The Clever Boys, though the defending Absa Premiership champions, find themselves rooted to the bottom of the table after 12 league games of the 2017/18 season, and have already lost as many matches this campaign as they did in the entirety of 2016/17.
Wits won the Telkom Knockout last week, thanks to a late goal from Vincent Pule, but after last night have now gone four league games without a goal since their win over Baroka back in October.
After his team fired blanks once again, Hunt told the media, “It’s disappointing, again, but we’re just not scoring. At least we’ve kept a few clean sheets now but not scoring has affected us this whole season. We’ve got to keep going and keep believing.
“I think last season we got away with basic errors because we scored goals. Last year we beat Ajax 5-0 and it could’ve been 5-0 again here. That’s the frustrating part about it.”
The 53-year-old admitted that they’re worried about their form in the league and have been for some time now.
He said, “We’ve been worried from the first game! Everybody is worrying because it’s crazy, you know. I think we know the league and you worry every day. You can’t play with worry, you have to play without fear and try to score. Goal-line tap-ins, I can go through two, three, four, five players who’ve missed huge chances.”
Despite their poor form, Wits are still just nine points away from league leaders, Mamelodi Sundowns, and could greatly improve their position should they manage to win their final two games of 2017.
