Hunt Joins Pitso In Prestigious Trophy Club

Gavin Hunt wrote his name into the South African history books this weekend, joining Pitso Mosimane in a prestigious club that only the two can boast to be a part of.

Hunt had four league titles and three domestic cup wins to his name going into the Telkom Knockout final over the weekend, with the title at stake being the last one to complete his collection of PSL trophies available in the PSL era.

Vincent Pule’s last-gasp goal saw the Clever Boys clinch victory in Durban to secure their third trophy in the space of 18-months, and in the process gave Hunt a clean sweep of domestic silverware – the Absa Premiership, Nedbank Cup, MTN8 and TKO.

Hunt’s first major trophy was the Absa Cup in 2004 with Moroka Swallows, then he went on to win the league with SuperSport United in 2008, 2009 and 2010, the only time it’s been won consecutively – before guiding them to Nedbank Cup victory in 2012.

Last season at Wits he won the MTN8 for the first time at the expense of Mamelodi Sundowns, followed by the Clever Boys’ first-ever league title back in May.

The 53-year-old and his former colleague, Pitso Mosimane, are the only two coaches who have managed to achieve this feat in South Africa, though Mosimane does have the addition of the CAF Champions League and CAF Super Cup on his list of accomplishments.

Though Wits find themselves rooted to the bottom of the league table at present, they are just 10 points away from leaders, Baroka, and a good run of form could potentially put them back in contention again.
