Benni: They Wonder Why They Are Mediocre

AmaZulu head coach Benni McCarthy has slammed match officials and questioned the quality of South African players, following an incident that resulted in Tercious Malepe sent off against SuperSport United.

As a result of their slow start to the season, AmaZulu remain winless and are in 15th place on the DStv Premiership log after playing to a 0-0 draw against Matsatsantsa at the Jonsson Kings Park Stadium on Tuesday evening.

After the match, McCarthy blasted match referee Thando Ndzandzeka and his fellow officials for what he felt was bad officiating, while the mentor also questioned the quality of Mzansi players after Malepe’s challenge on Jamie Webber earned him a red card.

“Yes, it was a very physical game, which I think went a little bit over physical because the referee couldn’t really control the game. He didn’t have the game under control. That was a one-way traffic, and everything was going in favour of the one team and for the other team the frustrations grew a little bit in the game and tackles were flying in,” said McCarthy, speaking through AmaZulu’s media department.

“I thought a clean challenge, a clean tackle from Tercious winning the ball and not even touching the opposition. But, yeah, that’s the mentality our South African players have these days, and they wonder why they underachieve and why they are mediocre because that’s the behaviour that you want. You want to get opposition players sent off because of diving and rolling over like a leg is broken when they didn’t even touch you,” he said.

“The referee fell for it and the fourth official saw it and he had been speaking to the referee when we made a foul or there was something there and he told the referee which way to go. Then he sees the situation and then nothing, and then we go 10 men. And with 10 men, I think we showed heart, we showed determination, we showed grit, we showed character to stay in the game and not allowing them to create one chance to go and win the game,” the coach said.
