How Eymael Turned Stars From Relegation Candidates To PSL Title Chasers

Free State Stars Impressive Under Luc Eymael

By Soccer Laduma - Mar 08, 2018 11:49 AM

Free State Stars are just seven matches away from possibly achieving their best ever finish in the PSL.

Ea Lla Koto, who have been impressive under Luc Eymael this season, are in third place on the PSL log from 23 matches played so far this season. The team’s best ever season of the PSL era was during the 2008/09 campaign, where they finished in fourth place on the log.

Prior to that, Stars had finished fifth on the log during the 2007/08 season. Apart from a few other seasons where the Bethlehem outfit managed to finish in the top eight, the side has struggled with fighting relegation in recent seasons. Just last season, Stars finished a disappointing 14th place on the log and escaped going to the play-offs by goal difference.

However, since the arrival of Eymael at the Free State club, the improvement in the team’s performances has been notable and significant. The team has been consistent in picking up the results in crucial games. While Eymael has consistently shifted the focus from them wanting to win the Absa Premiership, Stars still have a chance at the league title this season, with their impressive form and results.

Stars have managed to beat some of the big teams this season, including Orlando Pirates, SuperSport United and Bidvest Wits, after a slow start for the team under the Belgian coach. After Eymael replaced Sammy Troughton earlier in the season, Stars have become a force to be reckoned with in the PSL, with the team’s results and their log position speaking volumes about their calibre.

Notable important points about Stars under Eymael

Eymael has created a better and well-organised structure in how Stars play compared to how the team played in the past.

The signing of Patrick Phungwayo has worked well for the team as he has been one of their best performers, with his experience proving to be vital to the squad.

The coach has motivated players, as seen with Siphelele Mthembu and Rooi Mahamutsa, who were both deemed surplus to requirements at Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates respectively, have been made to believe in themselves again, with the two players repaying the Belgian's faith with top performances.

Younger players like Sinethemba Jantjie and Nyiko Mobbie are given freedom to express themselves on the field without fear and they are doing well.

The next league match for Stars will be against Chippa United at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium on March 17. Meanwhile, the two teams will meet in a Nedbank Cup Last 16 match at Goble Park on Saturday afternoon.

Firstly, this a very good article, SL should have more articles like this, very nice. On the matter, I think it's fair to say that Eymael is a good coach, he did it at Polokwane City, and is doing it again with F Stars, just wish he joins a bigger team with more resources (i.e. SS, Wits or CPT City), and prove himself there, not one of the big 3 yet, the pressure there might work against him.
