A former Orlando Pirates midfielder has joined the growing list of Mzansi’s ex-professional footballers who get involved in coaching after retiring from the game.
Having retired in 2008, following a spell with Bloemfontein Celtic, Thapelo Liau has now decided to get into coaching after being involved in different projects in recent years, and has been added to the technical team of Passion FC in the third tier of South African football for the 2021/22 season.
“Announcement of our assistant coach for the season 21/22 season. Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Thapelo Liau,” stated the Mpumalanga-based outfit in unveiling Liau in their social media platforms this week.
Liau was one of the best dribblers of his time and is still very passionate about the ‘South African way’ of playing and is often vocal about the coaches who restrict players from playing their natural way.
Apart from Pirates and Celtic, the 43-year-old had also been on the books of Moroka Swallows in his professional career.
At Passion FC, Abuti Bula Boot – as Liau is known in football circles – will work under head coach Thabang Ndlovu and closely with Sbu Kobe as assistants.
