Ex-Chiefs Player: Amakhosi Must Spend Big
Kaizer Chiefs will need to splash the cash in the transfer market if they are to compete with the PSL's best, according to a former Amakhosi player.
The Glamour Boys once again fell short in the 2017/18 campaign after finishing third in the Absa Premiership and losing in the Nedbank Cup semi-finals, which marked a third successive trophyless season at Naturena and resulted in the departure of head coach Steve Komphela.
With the hunt for a new coach also comes the need to strengthen options, and former Chiefs and Bafana Bafana defender David Kannemeyer has pinpointed the attacking department as a focal point for the Soweto giants.
Kannemeyer highlighted Mamelodi Sundowns forward Percy Tau's 11-goal haul as the difference between success and failure in the Absa Premiership this term and knows Chiefs will need a similar attacking threat if they are to topple the Brazilians next term.
"At the moment, Chiefs don't have that (a double-digits striker)," Kannemeyer told the Siya crew. "And I think that's where we're lacking: scoring goals."
When asked what the Chiefs bosses could do to rectify that issue, Kannemeyer was direct in his assessment, suggesting the Soweto giants need to start matching their rivals when it comes to spending in the transfer market.
He said: "I think they (Chiefs) need to go into the market, even if it means like the way Sundowns are buying players, and if you look at the last five to six years, what players did Chiefs really sign?
"And I think that's a result of Chiefs not winning trophies.
"But I think if they can open the chequebook and go out there and go get what the clubs need, they should be on the right track for next season."
