Former Bafana Bafana captain, Steven Pienaar, has decided to call time on his career, announcing his retirement from football this evening.

The 35-year-old midfield man enjoyed spells in South Africa, Holland, Germany and England in a career that last just under two decades, representing his national team on 61 different occasions.

Pienaar returned to Mzansi at the start of the 2017/18 season to join Bidvest Wits, but earlier this year decided to mutually terminate his contract and has now gone on to confirm that he is hanging up his boots.

Having graced the pitches of some of the best stadiums in the world during his time with Bafana, Ajax Amsterdam, Borussia Dortmund, Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and Sunderland, the two-time Eredivisie winner has opted to call it a day shortly before his 36th birthday.

The ex-Bafana skipper revealed his decision on Sport At 10 on SABC this evening.

Pienaar scored three goals for Bafana during his international career before calling time on it back in 2012.

Goodbye Steve. Thank you for all the shibobos, through passes and assits. I will never forget such a special talent that God blessed us with in this country, to see you every weekend causing havoc on that left side with Baines was special, it was even more special to hear the commentators reffering to you as "The South African", how can we forget the day that you ran to the advertising board and fix how the South African Flag had been put, great moments. You might have not made many people happy when you unexpectedly retired from the National Team but some of us understood that decision because you had given it your all...I am happy to have seen you play my man and proud of you for what you did in South African football, looking forward to your next journey. GOODBYE MY MAN, TILL WE SEE YOU IN SOUTH AFRICAN FOOTBALL AGAIN. SCHILLO, SCHILLO, SCHILLO

“Happy [Jele] has just lied because they are number two, but he says they are not thinking about winning the league title,” responded Mphahlele. “I don’t know, what are you thinking about then? Obviously, if you are number two then you want to fight for the league. “It’s the same as us, we are number three – one point behind Pirates – so we’re fighting for the league. There’s no need to beat around the bush. We want to try and challenge for the title. “If Pirates don’t want to challenge for the league, maybe they should bring their MDC team.” Rama C0ncluded

@chaledi Schillo is a multi millionaire what you do you mean he has nothing to show for. Show me a South African player for the past 10 years who has been in starting line consitently in Germany, England and Holland.

Welldone Schillo for an excellent career in football. Your dedication and commitment to soccer was evident for all to see. It is a pity that in South Africa we will always criticise instead of acknowledging. If you were in another country people would have appreciated your contribution to soccer. You played at 3 of the biggest leagues in the world and played at the highest standard more than some people will ever know. Do nt listen to people who have never even been to the stadium and watch you play during your career. Well done buddy and we are proud of you.
