The 35-year-old midfield man enjoyed spells in South Africa, Holland, Germany and England in a career that last just under two decades, representing his national team on 61 different occasions.
Pienaar returned to Mzansi at the start of the 2017/18 season to join Bidvest Wits, but earlier this year decided to mutually terminate his contract and has now gone on to confirm that he is hanging up his boots.
Having graced the pitches of some of the best stadiums in the world during his time with Bafana, Ajax Amsterdam, Borussia Dortmund, Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and Sunderland, the two-time Eredivisie winner has opted to call it a day shortly before his 36th birthday.
The ex-Bafana skipper revealed his decision on Sport At 10 on SABC this evening.
Pienaar scored three goals for Bafana during his international career before calling time on it back in 2012.
