Igesund: PSL One Of The Best Leagues In The World

Former Bafana Bafana Coach Gordon Igesund Describes PSL As 'One Of The Best Leagues In The World'

By Ryan Gordon - Jul 16, 2018 09:06 AM
Gordon Igesund has described the PSL as "one of the best leagues in the world", but knows the challenges that it brings for some clubs and coaches as they try and compete in the market.
Igesund has enjoyed a glittering career in the PSL, winning four league titles with four different clubs, while also having held the reins of Bafana Bafana to help shape the face of the local game.
And while the veteran coach believes the Absa Premiership is amongst the "top 10" leagues in the world, he also feels that, financially, some local clubs could fall behind in the race, but that they then need to start investing internally, and giving coaches more time to forge a winning team with limited resources.
"There's a lot of money in the (local) game at the moment, with sponsors in one of the best leagues in the world, one of the top 10 leagues, but there are certain clubs who just haven't got the type of sponsorship or they haven't got the kind of money," Igesund told the Siya crew.
"They've got to box clever in the market, they've got to develop players, they've got to really know how to run the market with buying and selling of players, you need to be very shrewd."
He continued: "It's about consistency, it's about putting things together and making it happen over a period of time."

In terms of companies wanting to associate themselves with teams I'd say yes, but in terms of the money contributed and the quality of football then it's a big NO!!

GI, you're so wrong. In 1998, Absa Championship Winner was 10M, In 2017 Absa Chamionship still 10M, and this 10M is Messi'e monthly salary and it equals to Andile Jali annual Salary. There is no monetary growth hence Mzantsi good players are not recognised and not taken serious abroad
