Media reports on Wednesday suggested that the alleged ‘known suspect’ is former Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana defender Mbulelo Mabizela.

According to reports, Mabizela was allegedly released on R1000 bail after he recently appeared at the Pietermaritzburg Magistrates Court.

When asked on Wednesday (May 15) afternoon, about the former football star’s alleged rape case, the SAPS offered to send a statement to the Siya crew as their response.

The SAPS’ statement reads as follows: “A case of rape is being investigated by Plessislaer Family Violence, Sexual Offences and Child Protection Unit after the victim was allegedly raped by a known suspect on 28 April 2019 at Machibisa area. A 38-year-old suspect was arrested and appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrates’ Court on 3 May 2019. The case was remanded to 10 May 2019 and court appearance results are unknown at this stage since the docket is still at court.”

The Pietermaritzburg-born ex-star, who made a name for himself during his heyday in the professional ranks as one of the top defenders to have ever emerged from Mzansi, admitted after retiring from the game to having messed up what could have been an illustrious and successful career with some of his off-the-field antics.

Mabizela also turned out for Mamelodi Sundowns, Platinum Stars, Bidvest Wits, Chippa United, Mpumalanga Black Aces, AmaZulu and Royal Eagles in Mzansi, while he also had overseas stints with Tottenham Hotspur in England and Valerenga in Norway respectively.

Attempts have been made by the Siya crew for a comment from the former centre-back, however, he was uncontactable.
