Defending Spanish La Liga champions, Atletico Madrid host Barcelona in the second leg of their quarter-final clash in the Copa del Rey at the Vicente Calderon Stadium this evening, Wednesday, January 28. Los Rojiblancos have already knocked out holders, Real Madrid in the previous round, and are plotting to end Barcelona's six-game winning run, by knocking them out of the Copa del Rey. Diego Simeone’s side have already faced the Catalans twice this season. They were defeated 3-1 at the Nou Camp in the league earlier this month, and trail 1-0 from the first leg ahead of tonight’s tie. Simeone faces a selection headache for tonight’s home fixture, with Fernando Torres, Mario Mandzukic and Antoine Griezmann all in fine form of late. He will however be without key defender, Diego Godin, who is suspended. Barcelona on the other hand hold a slender 1-0 advantage against the La Liga champions, after Lionel Messi scored the only goal of the game last week. Luis Enrique’s charges are still brimming with confidence following their 6-0 thumping of Elche in La Liga this past Saturday, and remain just one point adrift of La Liga leaders, Real.
Sheffield United take on Tottenham Hotspur in semi-final second leg of the Capital One Cup at Bramall Lane tonight, Wednesday, January 28. The Blades will need to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit against the Lilly Whites if they are to reach their first Capital One Cup final. Nigel Clough’s charges have won five of their last six League Cup home games against higher division opposition, and will take heart from that feat heading into tonight’s clash. They are in the semi-finals for the first time in 12 years, with their previous appearance at this stage being in 2003 where they lost 3-2 on aggregate to Liverpool. Tottenham could have a slight upper hand, having won all three previous League Cup encounters with Sheffield. Mauricio Pochettino’s side last won the Capital One Cup in 2008 when they beat Chelsea 2-1, the same opponents they could face should they advance to the final. Overall, Spurs have made the final on seven occasions, lifting the trophy four times.
