If you are a betting person, here are tips ahead of the weekend’s action brought to you by Soccer 6 and guest predictor, AmaZulu defender, Marc van Heerden.
ZAMBIA V NIGERIA
CAF ranking: Zambia 5th and Nigeria 9th
Useful facts: Reigning Afcon champions Zambia will see if their very defensive and counterattacking style of play can once again slay a giant. Nigeria are always a powerful force even if they’ve dropped to 9th in the Caf rankings.
Marc van Heerden: Phew, this could be a tough game. I’ll say a Nigeria win.
BURKINA FASO V ETHIOPIA
CAF ranking: Burkina Faso 23rd and Ethiopia 31st
Useful facts: Burkina Faso are undefeated in their last five matches played and will be full of confidence in this Afcon Group C encounter. Ethiopia are on a poor run of form and will be slight underdogs going into this clash.
Marc van Heerden: Burkina Faso win.
IVORY COAST V TUNISIA
CAF ranking: Ivory Coast 1st and Tunisia 10th
Useful facts: In what could be one of the most interesting matches in Group D, African powerhouse Ivory Coast take on North African giants Tunisia at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium. Didier Drogba and Yaya Toure will no doubt be eager to shine!
Marc van Heerden: Ivory Coast win, they’ve got quality players.
ALGERIA V TOGO
CAF ranking: Algeria 2nd and Togo 18th
Useful facts: Algeria will be one of the tournament favourites having seen their CAF ranking rise to an impressive second place. This means Togo will have to put on a top performance if they want to pick up some points in this clash.
Marc van Heerden: Algeria should take the win.
MOROCCO V SOUTH AFRICA
CAF ranking: Morocco 17th and South Africa 22nd
Useful facts: In what could be a decisive game in Group A, Morocco will test their very structured tactical approach against a Bafana Bafana side still finding their feet under Gordon Igesund. A positive result will be crucial to Bafana’s hopes of progressing.
Marc van Heerden: I’ll go with a draw and hopefully it’ll be enough for Bafana to get through.
