The Amakhosi won four trophies in three years prior to Komphela’s arrival at the club in 2015, and they had hoped to see that success continue after putting themselves back at the top of the pyramid in South African football.
However, that has not been the case, and they finished fifth and fourth in the Absa Premiership seasons that followed their league title in 2014/15, missing out on numerous trophies along the way.
Over the weekend they were knocked out of the Telkom Knockout, leaving them with just the league and the Nedbank Cup to play for this season to avoid going three whole seasons without a trophy.
Mamelodi Sundowns have been the most successful team in recent years as they picked up both domestic and continental honours, though Bidvest Wits and SuperSport United have also managed to get their hands on a couple of trophies.
The Western Cape has also got in on the action, with Ajax Cape Town and Cape Town City winning one title each since Chiefs’ last successful cup campaign, with the Glamour Boys on their longest barren streak in around 20 years.
Do you still think Steve Komphela can win a trophy this season?
