Kaizer Chiefs’ Big Five – Amakhosi’s Regular Stars
Steve Komphela seems to have found his favoured XI of late as they climb up the Absa Premiership table and into the title race, however, five, in particular, stand out.
Komphela has managed to silence his critics in 2017 as the Amakhosi turned their poor early season form to go on a 14-game unbeaten run in all competitions. This has taken them to second place in the league table and into the quarterfinals of the Nedbank Cup.
The former Maritzburg United head coach hasn’t changed his team around too much throughout the course of the campaign, as he has used only 27 players in all competitions. It comes as no surprise that the core of the team has remained the same.
Willard Katsande, Chiefs’ most consistent player in recent years, is the man leading the way with 2,580 minutes in 28 games, while defender, Lorenzo Gordinho, who’s having a standout season, has played 2,400 in 26.
The other three players who have been almost ever-present for the club this season are Itumeleng Khune, Ramahlwe Mphahlele and Erick Mathoho, with the trio having all played upwards of 2,000 minutes for the club in all competitions.
Khune, with 2,196 minutes, is having his most productive season in years following a spate of injuries, while Mphahlele (2,188) is justifying the effort that the Glamour Boys put into signing him from Mamelodi Sundowns.
‘Tower’, the only other player with over 2,000 minutes – 2,125 to be exact, has played 23 games and spent the majority of the campaign teamed up with Gordinho and Mphahlele at the back.
Who do you think has been Chiefs’ most important player this season?
