Amajita remain rooted to the bottom of Group F after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Korea Republic in their second group encounter on Tuesday evening.
Lyle Foster, who scored in the defeat to Argentina, dropped to the bench as Oswin Appolis was drafted in to the side.
After a shaky start, South Africa put some pressure on the Korea goal after 15 minutes, with Siphesihle Mkhize and James Monyane forcing a couple good save out of the Korean goalkeeper.
Theabo Senong's charges managed to carve out another opening 10 minutes before the break, but an un-marked Keenan Abrahams nodded wide from six-yards out.
Appolis' inclusion certainly looked a good decision as the SuperSport United youngster caused a couple problems in the final third.
Korea regain control in the second half and they were unlucky not to have taken the lead on the hour mark when Jeong Hojin rattled the crossbar from around 20-yards out.
The Asian outfit eventually got their goal in the 68th minute, with defender Kim Hyunwoo nodding into the far corner from a corner.
Japan continued to push for a second goal and they went close with 10 minutes remaining as Taejun Park's low strike was superbly saved by Khulekani Kubheka.
Amajita, meanwhile, were unable to carve out any serious openings in the latter stages of the second half as Korea hung on to claim their first win of the group stage phase.
It's not all doom and gloom for the South Africans, who can still qualify should they defeat Portugal on Friday and hope Argentina do them a favour against Korea.
