Italy Too Good For Amajita

FIFA U20 World Cup

Result: South Africa 0-2 Italy

Date: 24 May 2017

Venue: Suwon World Cup Stadium

Amajita's hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages of the FIFA U20 World Cup are fading, after they suffered a 2-0 loss to Italy in their second group game.

The Italians threatened early on, as Panico forced Mondli Mpoto into a fine low save after just six minutes.

10 minutes later, Mpoto was called upon once again, this time to keep out Andrea Favilli's stinging effort from the edge of the box.

Italy's dominance eventually paid off when they were awarded a penalty after 22 minutes when Wiseman Meyiwa was adjudge to have brought down Riccardo Orsolini, who stepped up to convert the penalty, 0-1.

Amajita, meanwhile, barely threatened in the opening 30 minutes and spent most of the half trying to get the ball off the Italians.

That proved to be trend for the rest of the first stanza, as Italy went close to doubling their lead through likes of Favilli and Orsolini but the score remained 1-0 at the break.

Thabo Senong opted for a change at the start of the second half as Thabo Cele made way for Keletso Makgalwa.

However, Amajita continued to struggle as Italy doubled their in the 57th minute when Favilli got ahead of his marker to head home from a long throw.

Senong responded by introducing Teboho Mokoena for Meyiwa as they looked for a way back into the clash.

Amajita had their first real effort at goal after 64 minutes through Luther Sing's free-kick, but Andrea Zaccagno produced a superb save to deny the attacker.

The South Africans had a chance to pull a goal back in the in 82nd minute but Tercious Malepe failed to turn home Reeve Frosler's effort in the six-yard box.

Senong's charges pushed for more goals in the closing stages but were unable to carve out another clear-cut chance as Italy held on for the 2-0 win.

Here's how they lined up:

Amajita: Mpoto, Frosler, Modise, Malepe, Mthethwa, Meyiwa, Cele, Mbatha, Margeman, Singh, Jordan.

Italy: Zaccagno, Scalera, Barela, Romagna, Coppolaro, Orsolini, Mandragora, Favilli, Pezzella, Panico, Ghglione.
