Amajita head coach, Thabo Senong has been dealt with a major injury blow ahead of the African Youth Championships, with the unavailability of Santos striker, Fagrie Lakay due to a hamstring injury.
Lakay also missed out on the trip to St Petersburg in Russia, where Amajita recorded a successful Commonwealth Cup triumph.
Senong had invited the Santos man to the training camp which was held in Port Elizabeth in the hope that he would recover from the injury, however "Hulk" had to be withdrawn following advice from the U20 medical staff.
“We would have loved to travel with Fagrie to Senegal as he has proved to be an integral part of this team,” noted Senong in a media statement from the South African Football Association.
“His immense contribution got us to where we are today. Who can forget the two crucial goals he scored in Polokwane when we defeated Cameroon in the second leg to qualify for the AYC.”
“Unfortunately he failed to shake off his injury, which will take some time to heal,” added the Amajita mentor.
Senong further eluded that Lakay and the other players who may not make his final 21 man squad, will be considered for a World Cup trip should the squad qualify for the U20 FIFA World Cup.
Senong is expected to name his final 21 man squad on Tuesday, February 24, whilst the team will depart for Senegal on Wednesday, February 25.
