McCarthy: Xulu Should Swap Chiefs For Sundowns

Former Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns defender, Fabian McCarthy, has said that, if he were in Siyanda Xulu’s position, that he’d return to the Brazilians, rather than stay at Naturena, where he’s struggling for game time.

Xulu’s options for the future were revealed in the Siya Special of Soccer Laduma issue number 1017 and, with the centre back making just one appearance for Amakhosi all season, McCarthy has said the problem with Xulu’s spell at Naturena is more about game time rather than a perceived lack of quality.

“For me, I don’t think the (Xulu) signing was a wasteful signing,” he told Soccer Laduma. “It’s just a matter of him getting enough opportunities... I think that, in terms of performance, in the games he played, he should have been one of the key players in defence.

“I don’t think I know enough about why they should sell him. It all depends on his contract. It’s a matter of if he wants to stay on with a big team or maybe even waiting to see if there’ll be a new coach. But, if there’s an opportunity for him to move, I don’t think he deserves to be sitting in the stands. He’s a quality player and he deserves to be in the team.”

When discussing one of Xulu’s options, which would be a return to his former club, Mamelodi Sundowns, McCarthy added that he sees no reason why the 25-year-old would not opt for a move to the reigning African champions.

“If, at this point in time, you had to ask me (whether he should join Sundowns), I would say that he should make the move, because at Sundowns there’s an opportunity for him to walk into that team,” he continued. “The only player in the back four that’s been consistent is Wayne Arendse and he’s getting on, also like Thabo Nthethe, who’s not really playing regularly. But Siya has age on his side and it won’t be a step backwards.

“That would obviously be a step forward because of the magnitude of what Sundowns achieved last season and the fact that they’re still in every tournament still. And, if the coach (Pitso Mosimane) wants him, why not? Why would you not want to go if you’ll make the team?”
