Huge Pending PSL Decision: No Retreat No Surrender

Experienced coach Jacob Sakala has explained how he is against any talk about possible early end of the Absa Premiership season.

Following the PSL’s decision last month to suspend all the matches due to the Coronavirus outbreak, the league’s chairman Irvin Khoza said the authorities would would remain flexible on when the 2019/20 Absa Premiership campaign shall finish, though it had earlier been expected that the season would be completed by no later than June 30.

Opinions have been different in the fraternity on what decisions should be taken should the deadly and disruptive COVID-19 persist for a longer period, with some pundits suggesting that the league should be ended, and some even advising on how the title winners should be decided.

“The PSL should continue once the Coronavirus has ended as there is no way that the league should just stop like that. We should soldier on and the league must continue and no one should say that the league should just end like this. Let’s treat the situation like we are at the end of 45 minutes of a match – the halftime and waiting for the second half to start so that we can continue,” Sakala advises, speaking to the Siya crew.

“I mean, there are still like two teams at the top of the log that can still win the league, and how should anyone then decide that the league must end and that one team could be winners. It would be like that team is given the trophy on a silver platter if that happens.

“Also, the two teams at the bottom of the log would rejoice to know that they won’t be relegated but get another opportunity to play at the top next season. The whole thing would also affect the NFD (GladAfrica Championship) and (ABC) Motsepe (League). How will clubs from those league get promoted? Clubs from those leagues spend a lot of money as most of them don’t have sponsors and by playing for nothing they would cry foul if such a decision was to be taken. Let’s soldier on, the league must continue – no retreat no surrender!” the coach added.
