Valverde: What Barca Thought Of Sundowns…
Ernesto Valverde says that FC Barcelona were a ‘little bit’ surprised by Mamelodi Sundowns when the two teams met at FNB Stadium, admitting that they caused the Catalans some problems.
Barca jetted out of South Africa straight after the game on Wednesday night having clinched a 3-1 win over Masandawana, and Valverde believes that Pitso Mosimane’s side is a good team despite the defeat.
Speaking to the media after the game, the 54-year-old said, “Sundowns surprised us a little bit because they were very fast, and the speed of the team was very high. They were enthusiastic and had several opportunities, and I think everybody has seen a good team.”
Meanwhile, Valverde also spoke of his pride at being involved in the Mandela Centenary Cup, heaping praise on the freedom fighter – a man who would have celebrated his 100th birthday this year.
He said, “He’s one of the biggest men not only of this country but in humanity. So for us, we’re very honoured to have been invited to play this game. It’s an honour for us as a club, and for myself as a manager, and for each of the players. I’m happy that it’s been a nice event for everybody.”
The Catalan giants now begin preparations for their final game of the season on Sunday, where they take on Real Sociedad at the Nou Camp.
