Bafana Bafana international, Erick ‘Tower’ Mathoho has seen his market value estimate double since joining Kaizer Chiefs from Bloemfontein Celtic in 2012.
The 25-year-old has managed to become an integral part of the Amakhosi machine since making the switch to Naturena a few years ago, also making a name for himself at international level with the national team.
Now, with the player finding himself in the best goalscoring form of his career so far, ‘Tower’ has seen his market value on German website, Transfermarkt.com, leap from €400,000 (R6.9m) in 2012 to €800,000 (R13.8m) in January of this year.
With just one year left on his contract at the end of this season, there has been talk of a possible move overseas for the tall central defender, however Chiefs will be eager to make sure that, if he does leave, they don’t lose him for free.
Previous players such as Mandla Masango and Tefu Mashamaite recently move to Denmark and Sweden respectively after seeing their deals at Naturena expire, and the Amakhosi will be hoping not to make the same mistake with Mathoho, especially given his estimated market value.
Bernard Parker still has the highest market value of any other player at Chiefs (€1m), while Itumeleng Khune follows behind him on €900,000.
