Emomo Hands DRC First Win

African Nations Championship

Result: Congo DR 1-0 Mauritania

Date: 14 January 2014

Venue: Peter Mokaba Stadium

A single penalty-kick goal from Eddy Ngoyi Emomo handed Congo DR a 1-0 win over Mauritania in their opening Group D CAF African Nations Championship at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Tuesday.

The opening 45 minutes was a fiery affair as neither team was prepared to sit-back, especially in the middle of the park as tackles came flying in.

The physical nature of the game meant the referee was always going to be kept busy in this tight affair which saw two players from each team cautioned before the break.

Congo DR had the lion’s share of possession in the opening stanza and created their first attempt on goal in the tenth minute as Emomo headed a free-kick narrowly wide of the target.

Two minutes later and debutants Mauritania had their first attempt on goal when El Hacen El Id flashed a 25-yard shot inches over the crossbar.

In the 22nd minute Congo DR were on the attack again as Chikito Lema Mabidi broke down the right flank and squared for Guy Lusadisu who saw his attempt from 14-yards blocked by a body of players.

Eight minutes later and Lusadisu was in the thick of the action again, but his shot from 20-yards out drifted just wide.

In the 39th minute Congo DR were bitterly unlucky not to take the lead after Mabidi got onto the end of a cross, but saw his header strike the woodwork and bounce away from danger.

Three minutes from the break Mauritania’s Ely Cheikh Voulany rounded the keeper in a one-on-one, but saw his attempt on goal cleared off the goalline by Joel Kimwaki.

The second 45 saw DR Congo continue to control the possession stakes and they finally made their pressure tell with the first goal six minutes after the restart.

The goal came from the penalty spot courtesy of Emomo after Mohamed Wade committed the initial foul inside the box, 1-0.

In the 64th minute Jean Kasusula had a great chance to double his side’s lead, but he fired wide from just inside the box with the goal at his mercy.

The game was always a heated affair and it reached its boiling point in the 75th minute when Moussa Sidi Bagayoko was sent for an early shower after receiving his second yellow card.

After Mauritania were reduced to ten men they struggled to get hold of the ball and create any significant chances on goal as Congo DR walked away with the three points.
