Elephants Trample Carthage Eagles

Ivory Coast stamped their authority on Group D as they thrashed Tunisia 3-0 in their AFCON clash at Royal Bafokeng Stadium.

The game started slowly but Salomon Kalou came close to opening the scoring in the 13th minute when Romaric's lofted pass found him, but his headed effort went wide.

Five minutes later the Elephants again threatened the Tunisia goal. Gervinho provided the pass to Kalou, but the Lille man couldn't find the target as he blasted over from close range.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 21st minute as Ivory Coast took a deserved lead. A deft one-two between Lacina Traore and Gervinho resulted in the latter placing the ball in the far corner of the Tunisian net to make it 1-0.

Kalou continued to be the thorn in the Carthage Eagles' side. He cut inside from the right and got a shot away in the 24th minute, but the keeper made an easy save.

Shortly before the break the Ivorians should have been 2-0 up when Yaya Toure tried to steer home Traore's cross at the far post, but he missed.

The game lost a little spark in the second half as neither side created enough clear-cut chances, but Tunisia kept themselves in the hunt until the last couple of minutes.

Gervinho and Kalou caused problems for the Tunisia defence again but neither player had the cutting edge needed to really punish the Eagles.

Tunisia's best chance came in the 84th minute when Saber Khlifa found himself in space in the Ivory Coast goal only to send his shot straight at Barry.

However, the Elephants secured the three points in the 87th minute as Yaya Toure smashed his shot into the back of the Tunisian goal to make it 2-0.

Gervinho then created the third for substitute Didier Ya Konan who only had to pass the ball into the goal after super work by his team-mate on the left wing.

Standard Bank Moment Of The Game: Ivory Coast were in control of the game but only had a fragile lead and were still in danger until the crucial second goal that Yaya Toure fired home to give them breathing space.
