Magents: Pirates Are Now Playing As A Team
Edward Motale Discusses Pirates' Defensive Improvements
Former Orlando Pirates defender, Edward “Magents” Motale has had his say on why Orlando Pirates’ defence has improved so dramatically this season.
Pirates currently have the joint best defensive record in the Absa Premiership after four games, conceding just a single goal, after conceding 40 in 30 games last season, the fourth worst record in the league. And Motale believes that it has come about due to a change in mindset amongst the team.
“You can see a change in their (Pirates’) mindset, because they play more as a unit,” he told Soccer Laduma. “It’s not like before when they couldn’t play with each other, let alone play for the coach.”
The 51-year-old continued by saying that new coach, Milutin Sredojevic, has made some changes, although he’s not entirely sure what they are, and that Musa Nyatama has made a big impact since joining the club from Bloemfontein Celtic.
“They are now playing as a team and I’m not exactly sure what it is that Micho did,” he continued. “I don’t know if he motivated them or if there is something that’s changed in the training sessions. Maybe they were just happy to see Micho come in… I don’t know. We all know that (Musa) Nyatama has been instrumental in midfield. He’s great in defence and great to watch. He’s fitted into the team like a glove and there’s been no stage fright.”
