Baroka FC chairman Khurishi Mphahlele has explained that their decision to demote head coach Matsemela Thoka was to protect him.
The Limpopo outfit announced that Thoka will now work with the DStv Diski Challenge side, with Kgoloko Thobejane making the move up to the first team having been in charge of the reserve team.
This announcement was made after Baroka’s 1-0 defeat to struggling Chippa United on Saturday. Baroka are in 13th place on the log standings, with just two wins after 10 matches.
“We are just repositioning. Coach Matsimela needs more time to learn. I think we rushed him, so we need to give maybe two more seasons. Yes, he did well last season and we ended in position 10. (But) he looked like he was struggling this year, so we must protect him,” Mphahlele told the Siya crew.
Thobejane has been in charge of the Baroka first team in different spells previously. He was dismissed during his last tenure due to matters relating to ill-discipline.
“Coach Thobejane is good and he is a father figure. Everybody likes him, so the boys will be able to perform under him without any fear. He is a darling of everybody. We parted ways with him last time due to ill-discipline, it was not performance based. So, everything is fine. He must come and finish what he started.”
