Swallows halted their three-game losing streak in the DStv Premiership after netting late to salvage a 1-1 draw against Maritzburg United on Saturday afternoon.
Result: Swallows 1-1 Maritzburg United
Date: 04 December 2021
Venue: Donbsonville Stadium
With new coach Dylan Kerr still awaiting his work permit, caretaker Fani Madida led the Birds on the bench, as they made a number of changes, including a first start for Orlando Pirates loanee Austin Muwowo and Mwape Musonda recalled to lead the line.
Swallows came to the game rock bottom on the log and a winless run that stretched to 12 matches with a heavy defeat against Kaizer Chiefs while Maritzburg extended their winless run to five matches with a draw against AmaZulu.
The hosts had a lively start as Muwowo had the first chance in the tenth minute but his effort lacked enough power to beat goalkeeper Marcel Engelhardt.
However, neither side had clear-cut chances as the game progressed and it took a set-piece opportunity for the Team of Choice to break the deadlock on the stroke of half-time, as Bongokuhle Hlongwane headed home a corner from Roman Human.
Swallows had attacking momentum in the early stages of the second stanza but, getting closer to finding the equaliser, as Engelhardt preserved Maritzburg's lead 15 minutes before time with a close-range save.
The Birds made an attacking and tactical change in the last ten minutes after Monnapule Saleng replaced Grant Margeman and Wandisile Letlabika eventually levelled matters two minutes before time, as the sides shared the spoils.
As a result, Swallows remain at the bottom of the log with nine points, equal on points with two teams above them, TS Galaxy and Baroka.
