Grobler Takes Charge In Golden Boot Race

DStv Premiership

Result: SuperSport United 2-0 Maritburg United

Date: 02 June 2021

Venue: Lucas Moripe Stadium

Bradley Grobler extended his lead in the Golden Boot race as SuperSport United claimed a 2-0 win over Maritzburg United on Wednesday evening.

Grobler started up top alongside Thamsanqa Gabuza, who came in for the suspended Guily Manziba while the Team of Choice were without Fares Hachi, who missed out through suspension.

There was another sub-plot as the race for the league's top scorers, Bradley Grobler and Thabiso Kutumela went head-to-head, with the former entering the clash with 14 goals compared to the latter's 12.

However, the game's first opening chance fell to Gamphani Lungu after 10 minutes but the SuperSport attacker sent his effort over the crossbar from close range.

It was SuperSport who drew first blood on 18 minutes when Grobler grabbed his 15th goal of the season after finishing off a move at the far post.

Maritzburg could have brought themselves on 28 minutes when Kutumela turned provider to tee up Phumlani Ntshangase, who sent a curling strike inches wide of Ronwen Williams' goal, which proved to be the side's last big chance of the half.

Maritzburg were unable to find a way back into the conest as SuperSport held on to move into sixth spot while and now have a slim chance of qualifying for third spot.
