Result: SuperSport United 1-1 AmaZulu
Date: 20 January 2021
Venue: Lucas Moripe Stadium
Bradley Grobler's second-half penalty earned SuperSport United a 1-1 draw against AmaZulu on Wednesday evening.
Kaitano Tembo went with the same side who drew 0-0 with Mamelodi Sundowns over the weekend, while Usuthu coach Benni McCarthy went for Mthembu over Majoro in the attack.
The game got off to a lively start, with SuperSport's Gamphani Lungu forcing Veli Mothwa into a fine save on six minutes before the Zambian striker had his header saved eight minutes later.
The decision to re-call Mthembu paid dividends for the away side on 31 minutes after the former Cape Town City striker opened the scoring with a well-taken finish.
SuperSport, who came into this clash unbeaten in seven games, struggled to claw their way back on level terms in the latter stages of the first half.
Benni McCarthy's men nearly added a second goal just before the hour mark but SuperSport's Luke Fleurs provided a vital block to deny Siyethemba Sithebe.
SuperSport got the equaliser with 13 minutes left on the clock as Grobler converted a penalty after Thamsanqa Gabuza had been brought down in the box.
That proved to be the final goal of the game as the two sides settled for a share of spoils, with SuperSport remaining in third spot.
