New South American Signing On Target In Stellies' Win

Dstv Premiership

Result: Stellenbosch 2-0 Chippa United

Date: 21 November 2020

Venue: Danie Craven Stadium

Argentine midfielder Junior Mendieta scored on his full debut for Stellenbosch, who claimed a 2-0 win over Chippa United in DStv Premiership action on Saturday afternoon.

Stellies handed new signing Phathutshedzo Nange his debut alongside another new arrival from Argentina Mendieta, who got his first start while Chippa were boosted by the return of Silas Maziya and Ryan Rae.

The hosts had a great chance to grab an early lead in the seventh minute after Dean Van Rooyen went clear on goal from Mendieta's through ball but he guided his shot wide.

The Western Cape side kept on piling the pressure and the Argentine Mendieta finally got the opener in the 21st minute with a header from Marc van Heerden's cross.

Van Heerden came close to assisting the second goal for Steve Barker's charges just before the break with a pin-point corner that Alan Robertson headed on target but was denied by shot-stopper Veli Mothwa and Stellies went to the break leading by an odd goal.

The Chilli Boys were building momentum coming from the break but they could not create clear openings and Lehlohonolo Seema took out Cameroonian striker Bienvenu Eva Nga in the last 18 minutes and brought on Nigerian striker Chidi Kwem.

Barker showed signs of defending the result in the last ten minutes after bringing on midfielder Granwald Scott in place of striker Ashley Du Preez.

Nathan Sinkala eventually sealed the three points for Stellies with the second goal in the last five minutes after curling a strike past Mothwa from Nange's through ball and Barker's troops clinched their first win of the campaign.
