Baroka Edge Stellies In Five-Goal Thriller

DStv Premiership

Result: Stellenbosch 2-3 Baroka

Date: 21 January 2021

Venue: Danie Craven Stadium

Baroka FC ended their five-match winless run after surviving a late scare to edge Stellenbosch FC 3-2 in the DStv Premiership on Wednesday evening.

Stellies were boosted by the return of Marc van Heerden and Junior Mendieta while Bakgaga made three adjustments, as Gerald Phiri Junior and Manuel Kambala were recalled alongside a surprise start for Leonardo Afonso.

Bakgaga were putting Steve Barker's charges under pressure in the early stages, with shot-stopper Lee Langeveldt and the defence kept busy.

However, The visitors had to wait until six minutes before the break to take the lead courtesy of Evidence Makgopa's fourth league goal of the campaign.

The Limpopo side had a good start in the second stanza as Makgopa doubled their lead on the hour-mark and completed his brace.

Phiri Junior added a third goal for Baroka in the last minute with a left-footed strike from the centre of the box after he was teed up by Makgopa.

There was drama in stoppage time as Stanley Dimgba pulled a goal back, before the Western Cape side were awarded a penalty two minutes later that was dispatched by Ryan Moon.

However, Thoka's troops managed to hold on in the end as they ended a five-match winless run that took them up to eighth on the log while Stellenbosch dropped down to ninth.
