Marumo Gallants were denied their first win of the DStv Premiership season after throwing away a two-goal lead against high-flying Royal AM.

DStv Premiership

Result: Marumo Gallants 2-2 Royal AM

Date: 19 October 2021

Venue: Peter Mokaba Stadium

Gallants were missing Celimpilo Ngema who netted a brace against AS Vita and he was replaced by Monde Mphambaniso in the only change while Royal recalled Thato Lingwati and Harris Tchilimbou.

Katlego Otladisa came close to giving Gallants the lead in the 19th minute with a dipping strike from outside the box that was tipped over the bar by shot-stopper Hugo Nyame.

John Maduka's charges were playing on counter-attacks and they had a big chance just before the half-hour mark after Zukile Mkhize broke away unchallenged on the right flank and played a cut-back at the near post but Victor Letsoalo side-footed his shot just wide.

Mkhize came the closest to breaking the deadlock for the visitors on the stroke of half-time with a first-time strike from the edge of the box that came off the post.

Mpho Maleka's charges had a dream start in the second stanza as Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo gave them the lead three minutes from the half-time break with a deflected toe-poked effort after a cut-back by Maboke Matlakala.

Royal made a tactical change on the hour-mark, as Mfundo Thikazi replaced Tchilimbou and that gave them a new dimension going forward, as they were creating chances but kept at bay by goalkeeper Washington Arubi.

Letsie Koapeng doubled Gallants' lead in spectacular fashion in the 73rd minute with wonderful curling strike from the edge of the box that sailed into the top corner.

However, John Maduka's charges were handed a lifeline three minutes later after they were awarded a penalty for a handball inside the box, which saw Letsoalo convert to reduce the deficit.

With the game seemingly headed for a draw, Sedwyn George snatched the equaliser in stoppage time with a close-range finsih inside the box after a shot ricocheted off the underside of the crossbar.
