Date: 05 June 2021

Venue: Loftus Versfeld

Mamelodi Sundowns ended their title-winning season in style after defeating Cape Town City 3-0 on Saturday afternoon.

Sundowns once again went with a strong line-up for the encounter but were still without Themba Zwane, while the Citizens recalled Mduduzi Mdantsane and Abdul Ajagun following the midweek win over Black Leopards.

It was the home side who broke the deadlock on nine minutes when Lyle Lakay curled home a superb free-kick that left Marc Anderson flat-footed on the goal-line.

The hosts should have had a second goal on 15 minutes when Peter Shalulile was played through on goal, but the Namibian surprisingly dragged his effort wide of the goal with only Anderson to beat.

However, the Sundowns coaches were forced into a change after 30 minutes when Mosa Lebusa was unable to continue and was replaced by Brian Onyango for the rest of the encounter.

City saw a bit more of the ball in the latter stages of the half, which nearly resulted in the equaliser when Fagrie Lakay broke down the right but Kennedy Mweene was on hand to deny the forward.

City coach Eric Tinkler responded with a double change at the start of the second half as Mpho Makola and Justin Shonga were introduced.

The changes seemed to have fired up the visitors, who nearly equalised soon after the interval when Mdantsane saw his strike palmed away by Mweene while Thapelo Morena pulled off a goal-line clearance moments later to deny Makola.

Aubrey Ngoma was introduced for the final 25 minutes and nearly made an immediate impact after spotting Mweene off his line, but his attempted lob sailed just wide of the upright.

However, it was Sundowns who got the next goal on 76 minutes as Shalulile showed great skill to eliminate two players before burying the ball into the bottom corner.

The Namibian was not done yet as he bagged his 15th goal of the season in the final seven minutes with a first-time finish from Morena's impressive pass to wrap up an impressive win.
