Arrows Sink Maritzburg In KZN Derby

DStv Premiership

Result: Golden Arrows 2-1 Maritzburg United

Date: 30 January 2021

Venue: Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium

Maritzburg United suffered a third successive DStv Premiership loss after going down 2-1 to Golden Arrows in the KwaZulu-Natal derby on Saturday evening.

Arrows recalled Michael Gumede and Lungelo Dube while the Team of Choice brought Daylon Claasen, Tebogo Tlolane, Thabiso Kutumela and Nazeer Allie back into the line-up.

The game was open in the early stages, with Maritzburg getting the better chances but they were kept at bay by the brilliance of shot-stopper Sifiso Mlungwana between the sticks.

Thabiso Kutumela eventually broke the deadlock for Ernst Middendorp's charges with nine minutes left of the first stanza after going through on goal from Judas Moseamedi's threaded pass to fire past Mlungwana.

Mandla Ncikazi's troops were struggling to get going in the closing minutes of the first stanza, and hardly put the Maritzburg defence under pressure which resulted in the side trailing at the break.

Arrows were fired up coming after the break as Lindokuhle Mtshali levelled matters ten minutes into the second half with a strike inside the box after he was put into space by Knox Mutizwa.

With the game opening up, Mutizwa secured the winning goal for Abafana Bes'thende in the last 11 minutes with a close range finish from a rebound after a cross by Divine Lunga.

The win took Arrows up to sixth spot while Ernst Middendorp's men find themselves in 14th position, with only goal difference keeping the side out of the relegation zone.
