Celtic Rescue A Point At Stellies

DStv Premiership

Result: Bloemfontein Celtic 1-1 Stellenbosch

Date: 16 January 2021

Venue: Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium

Stellenbosch FC retained seventh position in the DStv Premiership after playing to a 1-1 draw with Bloemfontein Celtic at Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium on Saturday.

Stellenbosch had the ball in a promising area after 12 minutes. The quick throw was taken to Zitha Macheke, who turned his defender and delivered but nobody was on the end of a well-worked move.

Steve Barker's charges were creating most of the chances in this match and four minutes later, Macheke played in Stanley Dimgba and he flicked it into the path of the overlapping Deano van Rooyen, who played it across goal before it was cleared to safety by the Celtic defence.

The visitors countered in the 19th minute. A long ball was played onto the chest of Leletu Skelem, who brought it down. He laid it off to Waseem Adams, who set Dimgba on a foot race with Rikhotso. Dimgba beat him to the ball and was in on goal but unfortunately could not cap a promising move off with a finish as he shot wide.

Stellies took the lead on the stroke of half-time. Van Rooyen carried the ball forward and cut inside before attempting to play in Adams. He was on the end of a clattering tackle. Van Rooyen dashed in to hit the loose ball and he too was tackled. The ball popped up in the box and found its way to Skelem who found the net on his left foot.

The hosts equalised in the 57th minute. From a counter attack, the ball was laid off to Menzi Masuku who hit it at goal. It took a deflection off a Stellies defender, giving Langeveldt no chance.

Jorge Mendieta and Granwald Scott were introduced by Stellies coach Steve Barker and the former also made an instant impact. The winger carried the ball through the centre of the pitch. Nathan Sinkala over-lapped on the left side and The Zambian delivered the ball on a platter to oncoming Skelem in the box but he fluffed his lines.

With eight minutes to go, the ball was chipped into Mendieta. The Argentinian brought it down and cut inside before dumming to shoot and then laying it off to an unmarked Sinkala in acres of space but the Zambian shot wide with the goal at his mercy.
