CT City Humble Leopards With First Win Of 2021

DStv Premiership

Result: Black Leopards 0-2 Cape Town City

Date: 20 January 2021

Venue: Thohoyandou Stadium

Cape Town City registered their first win of the year in the DStv Premiership with a 2-0 success away to Black Leopards on Wednesday evening.

The Citizens handed a debut to Zambian striker Justin Shonga while Taariq Fielies returned to the defence as Ioannis Potouridis dropped to the bench.

Shonga was eager to make his presence felt early on as he did well to lose his marker before unleashing a low strike that sailed just wide of the mark on nine minutes.

The Citizens eventually made their dominance count on 31 minutes, with Surprise Ralani firing past King Ndlovu after being set up by Fagrie Lakay.

Leopards, meanwhile, did not look like the same side who put Orlando Pirates to the sword this past weekend as they failed to trouble Peter Leeuwenburgh in the first half.

With the hosts pushing for an equaliser, Fielies came to the Citizen's rescue after 53 minutes with a vital clearance to keep his side ahead.

City coach Jan Olde Riekerink opted to re-shuffle his stall with 27 minutes left on the clock, as Shonga's debut came to an end after making way for Mpho Makola.

While Leopards were unable to find a way past the water-tight City defence, Ralani went on to seal the win in the 84th minute to complete his brace on the day.

As a result, the Citizens moved up to fifth spot in the standings after ending their three-game winless run in the league.
