Both sides had nothing but pride to play for, as Leopards were officially relegated on Wednesday evening with the loss to Cape Town City while Celtic's defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns ended their top-eight hopes.

The visitors had to make do without the suspended Tshepo Rikhotso who was one of the bigger threats against Sundowns as Lucky Baloyi was drafted into the right-back slot.

It was Leopards who broke the deadlock on 14 minutes through Roderick Kabwe, who collected a pass wide open in space and sent a superb strike past Mondli Mpoto from distance.

The men from the Free State were unable to claw themselves back on level terms in the opening 45 minutes, with goalkeeper Rotshidzwa Muleka enjoying a quiet first half on a rare appearance for Leopards.

John Maduka eventually opted for a change as Van der Ross was introduced for the final 25 minutes, with Victor Letsoalo making way down the right flank.

The change proved to be a masterstroke as Van der Ross restored parity in the 74th minute for his second league goal of the campaign.

That proved to be the final goal of the game though, as Leopards bid farewell to the top flight while Celtic finish outside the top eight.
