Baroka Boost Survival Hopes With Vital Win

Baroka FC gave their survival bid a big boost after securing a crucial 1-0 win over Golden Arrows in DStv Premiership action on Wednesday evening.

DStv Premiership

Result: Baroka 1-0 Golden Arrows

Date: 04 May 2022

Venue: Peter Mokaba Stadium

Vincent Kobola was put in charge of the Baroka team for the rest of the season after Kgoloko Thobejane was demoted to the DStv Diski Challenge side.

Kobola rang the changes after the 3-2 loss to Swallows, as Phelelani Shozi and Thamsanqa Masiya replaced Denwin Farmer and Mashweu Mphahlele in defence while goalkeeper Jackson Mbabokgwane was given his debut.

There was a lot at stake for both sides, as Arrows carved out the first chance on 15 minutes when Siboniso Conco was denied Mabokgwane, before Sifiso Mlungwana was called upon to deny Sbonelo Ngubane.

The home side were afforded a lifeline with 30 minutes gone after being awarded penalty, which captain Bonginkosi Makume converted for his first goal of the campaign.

Arrows had a good record on the road coming into the clash, having only last one of their last eight away matches which was the 6-0 mauling at the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns.

The visitors looked to the bench with the side struggling to break the Baroka defence, as Bafana Bafana international Pule Mmodi was introduced in place of Conco for the final 30 minutes.

Arrows showed great resilience to come from behind to defeat Kaizer Chiefs last week, but there would be no comeback this time around as Baroka held firm at the back to seal three points and a clean sheet.

Baroka remain bottom of the log, but they are now just two points behind 15th-placed Swallows FC while Arrows remain in ninth position.
