Official: AmaZulu Secure Champions League Spot

DStv Premiership

Result: AmaZulu 1-0 Swallows

Date: 02 June 2021

Venue: Jonsson Kings Park Stadium

AmaZulu will be playing in the CAF Champions League next season after securing a 1-0 win over Swallows on Wednesday night.

Swallows coach Brandon Trruter made one change from the draw with Mamelodi Sundowns as Thabo Matlaba repalced Sifsio Hlanti at left-back.

Usuthu, meanwhile, started with Siphelele Mthembu up top while there were also starts or Talent Chawapihwa and Zukile Kewuti as they looked to cement second spot.

The game got off to a relatively slow start as both sides looked to feel each other out in the opening 15 minutes of the first half.

The first-half display should have come as no surprise as Benni McCarthy's men had failed to score in their last two outings while Swallows drew their last seven encounters.

That proved to be the trend for the remainder of the half as the sides entered the interval scoreless, despite Usuthu's late dominance.

As a result, McCarthy opted for the first change at the start of the period as the injured Mthembu made way for Lehlohonolo Majoro.

The hosts were awarded a penalty moments later for a handball in the box, which allowed Tapelo Xoki to convert for the opening goal.

Augstine Mulenga nearly added a second goal for the hosts on 75 minutes but he was unable to turn home a cross in the box, with his side shot heading wide of the crossbar.

Nevertheless, Xoki's solitary strike was enough to secure three points and a second-place finish this season.
