African Nations Championships
Result: Burundi 1-2 Congo DR
Date: 22 January 2014
Venue: Peter Mokaba Stadium
DR Congo came from a goal down to beat Burundi 2-1, and earn a place in the quarter-finals of the African Nations Championship at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday.
The game started with a moment of controversy as Congo DR had the ball in the back of the net as Mundele reacted fastest after Arakaza fumbled a long-range effort, but the referee ruled that the goalkeeper was fouled in the process with just six minutes played.
Burundi however did break the deadlock on the quarter-hour mark as their skipper Selemani found space on the left before finding the corner with a low shot to make it 1-0.
DR Congo then had the perfect opportunity to level matters when they were awarded a penalty after Ndome was fouled in the box.
Mundele then stepped up to take the 19th minute spot-kick but his effort was poor and was easily saved by Arakaza in the Burundi goal.
Mundele then made up for his penalty miss and equalised for DR Congo when he acrobatically volleyed into the roof of the net, leaving Arakaza with no chance this time to make it 1-1 in the 25th minute.
The striker then handed his side the lead in the 38th minute when he got on the end of a low cross and placed his shot perfectly into the bottom corner to give DR Congo the lead.
Mundele then claim close to grabbing a hat-trick in the 51st minute but this time the striker could not find the target and blasted his effort over the crossbar.
Both side’s created a handful of half-chances in the second period without really testing their opposition’s defence and DR Congo booked a quarter-final date with Ghana in the next round.
