‘Downs Thump Celtic In TKO

Telkom Knockout Last 16

Full Time: Bloemfontein Celtic 0-4 Mamelodi Sundowns

Date: 6 October 2103

Venue: Kaizer Sebothelo stadium

The defending Telkom Knockout champions were dumped out of this year’s competition in emphatic fashion as Mamelodi Sundowns beat Bloemfontein Celtic 4-0 in a last 16 match at the Kaizer Sebothelo stadium on Sunday.

It was the perfect start for Sundowns who took the lead in the fourth minute of the match thanks to a mistake from goalkeeper Patrick Tignyemb.

The Celtic shot-stopper scrapped a clearance which fell to Cuthbert Malajila who proceeded to play the ball to Dove Wome on the edge of the box and he produced a clinical finish into the bottom left-corner, 1-0.

Three minutes later and Sundowns doubled their lead thanks to an own goal from Limbikani Mzava.

Wome drove an in-swing free-kick from the left side of the field into the box which glanced off the head of Mzava as the ball beat Tignyemb at his near post, 2-0.

Celtic tried to find their way back into the game after that, but struggled to create many decent goal scoring chances as the Sundowns defence held firm.

The home side’s first shot on goal came in the 25th minute as Ruzaigh Gamilden let loose with a powerful 25-yard shot that sailed narrowly over the crossbar.

Five minutes later, however, and Celtic saw themselves go further behind as Khama Billiat found Sundowns third goal, volleying home a Bryce Moon right-wing cross from eight-yards out, 3-0.

After going three goals up Sundowns took their foot of the pedal and rode out the rest of the half with relative ease.

The start of the second 45 saw Sundowns put the result beyond doubt with their fourth goal three minutes after the restart.

Billiat found his second goal of the afternoon with a beautiful curling shot into the bottom right-hand corner of the net from the edge of the box, 4-0.

Celtic made a couple of changes after that, but their bench was unable to inflict any difference on the match as Sundowns continued to dictate terms.

There were no more goals as Celtic crashed out of the Telkom Knockout while Sundowns moved onto the quarterfinals of the competition.
