Mamelodi Sundowns have confirmed the signing of former Kaizer Chiefs stopper Thela Ngobeni as they look to bolster their goalkeeping options.
The player arrives on a short term deal although Sundowns have the option to renew his contract at the end of the season according to their official website.
With Calvin Marlin and Dennis Onyango having been sidelined by injuries sustained on the club’s recent tour to Zimbabwe, the Chloorkop-based side were desperate to sign a new keeper.
Sundowns were forced to use the services of a guest goalkeeper from Zimbabwe’s Chicken Inn FC in their match against Highlanders FC whilst on tour in the neighbouring country.
Ngobeni will now provide cover for Wayne Sandilands who recently returned from international duty with Bafana Bafana.
The 24-year-old also spent time training with University of Pretoria but Steve Barker’s side chose not to offer him a deal.
The player then continued his search for a club and Downs coach Pitso Mosimane and his technical team brought him aboard after watching him in action for the club’s reserve team in a 6-1 win over SuperSport United this week.
Ngobeni is a timely acquisition for Sundowns as the Absa Premiership season recommences this week, with a February 12 date with Amakhosi on the cards.
