Benni McCarthy’s former coach, Sergio dos Santos, has heaped praise on the player following the announcement of his retirement from professional football.
Dos Santos gave Benni his big break in topflight football when he signed him for Cape Town Spurs on loan from second-tier club Seven Stars. The move turned out to be the beginning of greater things to follow for McCarthy.
“I was the first one to give him an opportunity in the premier league. He came to me on loan for five matches. He was with Seven Stars at the time. I got Rob Moore to give him to me on loan for five matches before he went to the African under-20 championship. He played in all five matches. He came on as a substitute in the first two and then played three matches on the trot. Fireworks! He scored against Mamelodi Sundowns, he scored twice against Kaizer Chiefs and he scored against SuperSport United. He was unbelievable,” said Dos Santos.
The former Kaizer Chiefs coach told Soccer-Laduma that he predicted already that McCarthy would go far in his football career. Benni was 18 at the time he played for Spurs.
“I always thought he had the talent. Once I worked with him at Cape Town Spurs in a very short space of time, I realised that he would definitely go all the way. He was the type of player that despite having a lot of confidence, he was a very good listener. He followed instructions very well. That was his strength. He went onto the field and put in to practice what was discussed in training. I knew that he was going to be something special,” explained Dos Santos.
