Does Igesund Deserve To Go?

With Bafana Bafana crashing out of the Chan tournament after a calamitous 3-1 defeat to Nigeria, a question being widely asked by the football public at large appears to be, does Gordon Igesund deserve to go as coach?

By losing to an at best third string Nigeria with a perhaps fourth string Bafana outfit, Igesund's charges finished third place in Group A, and crashed out of the 16 team tournament in disappointing fashion.

However, does Igesund's recent record as coach need to be considered before Safa even begin to think of pulling the trigger and ending his time in charge?

Some of the plus points to the coach's time in charge have been the introduction to the national set-up of the likes of May Mahlangu and Dean Furman. In particular, Furman has impressed and only an unfortunate injury seems to have temporarily halted Mahlangu's progress.

In addition, last January Bafana progressed to the second round of the Afcon after a brave performance against Morocco. Only bad luck in the penalty shoot-out against Mali in the next round stopped them advancing even further.

Bafana were also perhaps very unfortunate not to progress further in the team's World Cup qualifying campaign as well. After Igesund's predecessor, Pitso Mosimane, dropped four critical points at home in Bafana's opening two matches against minnows, Ethiopia and Botswana, it seemed a case he was always playing catch-up.

Soccer-Laduma's journalism team in the majority seem to believe that Igesund deserves more time. Website editors, Cliffie Thudinyane and Jason Acar, believe judging the 57-year-old on the Chan would be unwise.

Thudinyane said, "Igesund did not have all his players available. The Afcon is next year and letting him go will be like taking 10 steps backwards. Look, he has an amazing record in his short stint - 28 games and has won 14 of those game which is 50 per cent. We've lost seven and drawn seven, and have beaten Spain along the way."

Acar added, "Definitely we must keep him. There's been general improvement under Gordon and even though we were poor against Mali and Nigeria, we can't judge him on this."

Siya crew journalist, Masebe Qina, also believes Igesund needs more time. He said, "Let's keep him! We've got the Afcon qualifying coming up. Yes, it would've been nice to progress in a tournament we hosted, but we'll learn from this."

Nonetheless, with Safa's intentions not clear now that Bafana have exited the event, it could be that Igesund could still be relieved of his duties in the near future. Plenty of fans on our website are taking the position that Bafana's exit was embarassing, and that time needs to be called on his stint in charge as a result.
