Date: 19 October 2013

Platinum Stars beat Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 on Saturday evening in an entertaining Telkom Knockout quarter-final at the Moruping stadium, thanks to goals from Mogakolodi Ngele and Mduduzi Nyanda. Dove Wome scored for Sundowns.

Sundowns will rue the missed opportunities in this game, including Khama Billiat missing a penalty, with two attempts, that could have given them the lead at the time.

The match kicked off half an hour later than expected, after a storm came in, and there were fears of danger from  the lightning, but the weather cleared up, and the game went on.

Sundowns had the first chance of the game just thirty seconds in, when the ball fell to Anthony Laffor but his snap shot, from just outside the box, flew wide of the goal.

In the 10th minute Vuyo Mere delivered in a good cross, but Siphelele Mthembu's header flew wide.

Laffor tried another long range attempt in the 11th minute but the ball went straight at Dikwena's goalkeeper Siyabonga Mpontshane.

In the 13th minute Sundowns went 1-0 up through Dove Wome, who shot from just outside the box, and the ball took a slight deflection to beat Mpontshane.

Two minutes later Alje Schut went close from a corner but his header went straight down and bounced over the goal.

In the 16th minute Khama Billiat showed some fancy footwork as he back-heeled a pass into the path of Tebogo Langerman, but Langerman's shot flew over.

Dikwena came very close to equalizing in the 24th minute, but despite Mdudizi Nyanda's shot from the left side of the box beating Kennedy Mweene, it hit the woodwork and Sundowns were able to clear.

In the 27th minute Wome tried an ambitious long range effort from a free kick, but it lacked power, and went straight to Mpontshane.

Wome had another chance in the 28th minute after he was played in by Hlompho Kekana, but Mpontshane was able to block his shot from an acute angle.

A minute later Mogakolodi Ngele forced a saved from Mweene, with a shot from outside the box, but Mweene was able to stop it and then gathered the loose ball.

In the 29th minute Tintswalo Tshabalala tried an over-head kick but his shot flew high and wide.

Ngele had another long range effort in the 31st minute, but again Mweene was up to making the save.

In the 33rd minute Wome set up Billiat in the box, but his shot went across the goal and wide, and seconds later Laffor tried another shot from the edge of the box but it went wide.

Wome tried another long range effort in the 34th minute, but his shot from just outside the area went wide and a minute later, as both teams continued to pepper the goals with long range attempts, Mere tried one from the outside the box, but it flew wide as well.

In the 38th minute Platinum Stars were awarded a penalty by referee Victor Gomes after Mweene was adjudged to have brought down Mthembu, and Ngele made it 1-1 as he sent the keeper the wrong way, and scored in the bottom right corner.

In the 42nd minute Mpontshane was forced to make another save as once again Wome broke free, but the goalkeeper closed down the Sundowns man, and stopped a shot coming in, and at half-time the score remained 1-1.

Wome had the first chance of the second-half but his shot from the edge of the area in the 47th minute went wide of Mpontshane's goal.

In the 49th minute Laffor tried another effort from outside the area, but his effort went wide, and seconds later Billiat dribbled all the way into the box from the half-way line, but his final shot lacked power and trickled wide.

In the 51st minute Mthembu had a great chance to put Dikwena ahead, but his attempt from close range in front of goal, somehow went wide.

Two minutes later Laffor had his fifth shot of the game, all from outside the box, but his shot rolled safely into Mpontshane's hands.

A minute later Malajila had a goal ruled out, after Billiat who had set it up, was ruled off-side.

In the 55th minute Sundowns were awarded a penalty by referee Victor Gomes, after Tshepo Gumede was adjudged to have obstructed Malajila in the box.

Mpontshane saved Billiat's first penalty attempt, but a re-take was ordered, and this time Billiat blasted it over for the score to remain level.

Mthembu had another chance for Dikwena in the 59th minute but his header flew over the goal.

In the 68th minute, Ngele forced Mweene to tip over, as he tried another shot from a free kick.

Robert Ng'ambi went close to scoring seconds later, as Ngele latched onto a loose ball and delivered in a top cross, but Ng'ambi's shot flew over.

Platinum Stars went into the lead in the 70th minute as they counter attacked through Mthembu, who's shot was blocked, but it fell into the path of Nyanda who made no mistake to make it 2-1.

Two minutes later Wome ran onto a great long ball from Schut, but his shot went into the side netting, as Sundowns pushed for an equalizer.

In the 75th minute Ngele forced a great diving save out of Mweene, as Ngele dribbled into the box and unleashed a shot.

Sundowns had another goal ruled out in the 77th minute, as Schut was ruled off-side when he headed the ball in from a dead ball situation.

As Sundowns pressed for the equalizer, Schut pushed forward, but his header in the 87th minute went straight to Mphontshane.

Substitute Mzikayise Mashaba had one last effort two minutes into extra time, but his powerful shot just flew wide.
